| Customer Reviews: Great for GCSE, A Level even degree level! May 3, 2008 R. Lewis (UK) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
This book is excellent in the way it breaks down the different areas of English. Very basic approach and really useful for how to analyse novels and poems. I bought this book and used it throughout my English Literature degree, and it helped me get really good marks. I also lent it to my little sister who was doing A Level English and she also found it extremely useful. I would recommend this to all levels, whether it be GCSE, A Level or even degree level. It is an excellent book which helps you grasp the basic techniques and points needed to read English Literature.
Comprehensive and practical literature text book November 29, 2004 Ms. C. R. Kendrick (Bedford, UK) 25 out of 26 found this review helpful
I am an adult student studying an Open University Humanities course and I was delighted to find a manual which would cover Novels, Poetry and Plays and give a thorough grounding in literary terms, practical criticism and current theoretical approaches. This is an ideal A-level and undergraduate introduction to studying literature. For those of you who want more depth on each individual area, then I can wholeheartedly recommend Studying The Novel (Hawthorn), Studying The Play (Wallis) and Studying Poetry (Matterson), published by Hodder Staughton and available on Amazon.

This is an excellent and informative book. I have found it useful both for A-Level and in the first year of my degree course. It is clearly written and has many useful textual commentaries on well-known English texts.

Also check out "Mastering Advanced English Language" - Both books are extremely helpful for the beginner and advanced English student. As an adult student I find some text books condesending, this set however is informative and specific.
